Physical Education, Sport and Swimming
At Thornden Wood Primary School, it is our intent to provide a high-quality P.E. curriculum which inspires pupils to succeed and excel in physical activities. We aim for pupils to:
Learn and develop fundamental and movement skills. (Fundamental and movement)
Show and link the skills they have learnt and apply them to a range of activities. (Show and Link)
Understand tactics and rules, whilst engaging in competitive and co-operative activities both individually and with others. (Tactics, rules and teamwork)
Compare, develop and evaluate their performance to make improvements. (Describe ways to improve)
Learn and consider the impact of health and fitness and develop ways to improve well-being. (Fitness and Health)
In EYFS and KS1, the focus of the PE curriculum is on the development of the fundamental skills that will be built upon in KS2 when they are applied in specific sports. At Thorndon Wood, we wish to encourage and develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE in all young people.
We aim to help ensure a positive and healthy physical and mental outlook in the future and help young people to develop essential skills like leadership and teamwork.
We also wish to provide each child at Thorndon Wood with a range of opportunities to compete against their peers in inter house competitions each term which is celebrated. This is also achieved through sporting competitions, matches and tournaments against other schools either through the school games format or inter trust competitions with other EKC schools. The competitive element of the schools PE curriculum helps children gain a sense of achievement, confidence and pride and teaches valuable life skills like teamwork, respect and resilience.
Swimming:
We currently offer swimming to Year 2 and 3 children in a 3 term block. Having focused swimming lessons over a longer period has proved successful in providing children the best opportunity to meet national curriculum expectations for swimming.
Additionally, we also provide top up sessions for children in KS2 who we feel would benefit from this.
